    Your review date

Add the date of your last assessment and we will work out when it needs reviewing, whether it is already overdue, and what would force an earlier review.

    What brings the date forward

    • The building's layout, use or occupancy changes — a conversion, a new commercial tenant, a change of evacuation strategy.
    • Work is done to the structure, external walls, balconies or flat entrance doors.
    • A fire, near miss, or repeated false alarms that point at a failing system.
    • New residents with mobility, cognitive or sensory needs who cannot escape unaided.
    • Enforcement contact from the fire and rescue service, or a licensing or insurance condition.
    • New guidance or legislation that changes what a suitable assessment must cover.

    Background

    Keeping an assessment current

The law does not name an interval. Article 9 of the Fire Safety Order requires the assessment to be reviewed so it stays current, and to be updated where the premises, the work or the people at risk change. In practice that means an annual review, with a full reassessment on a material change or after roughly three to five years so the document does not quietly drift out of date.

A review is not a rubber stamp. It should confirm the previous actions were actually completed, check that the evacuation strategy still holds, and revisit anything about the building that has changed since — new tenants, replaced doors, altered escape routes, work to the external walls.

The most common failure we take over is an assessment that was fine on the day and never revisited, with an action plan sitting half-done. Diarising the review date, and the quarterly and monthly checks around it, is the cheapest compliance win available to a responsible person.
